Demystify the Superpowers of These Superfoods

We have all heard of the word superfoods, but what are they really? Superfoods are mostly plant-based foods, but they can contain some dairy or fish. They are believed to be jam-packed full of nutrients, fight off serious diseases such as cancer and heart disease, and highly beneficial for our overall health.

There are many foods that have been labeled as superfoods, including ones we are familiar with such as salmon, kale, acai berries, avocados, nuts and blueberries.

There are also some ingredients that are classified as superfoods that we are not as familiar with. The ones mentioned below are some prime examples of superfoods that our health can benefit from.

MACA

Sometimes referred to as Peruvian ginseng, Maca Root grows in the Andes of central Peru at extreme altitudes (over 13,000 feet) and in stressful weather conditions. It is usually dried and consumed in powder form and can also come in liquid extract and capsules. A large portion of people who consume this root place it in their oatmeal, smoothies, and desserts. Some benefits include mood enhancement, menopause relief, increased libido, higher fertility rates in men and increased energy and memory functioning.

SPIRULINA

This blue-green algae is believed to have some major health benefits and essential nutrients. It has high protein and vitamin content, as well as immune system health, inflammation reduction and antioxidant properties. There has also been proof of this magical superfood in the aid of managing diabetes and losing weight, as well as lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.

KALE

We’ve all heard of Kale and its superfood hype. Kale is a dark leafy vegetable that is loaded with calcium, fiber, minerals and vitamins K, C and A – all essential for a healthy immune system. You can enjoy it in salads, bake it in the oven to make Kale chips, or dry it and make a powder to add to your morning smoothie.

 

CAMU CAMU

Derived from a South American sour berry, Camu Camu powder can be a great addition to a daily diet because of its high level of antioxidants and vitamin C. This powder is fat-free and may prevent cancer, improve cognitive function, help with weight loss and support heart health.

SACHA INCH

Also referred to as the Inca peanut, Sacha Inchi is grown in the highlands of Peru. It has been used as a food source in the Amazon rainforest for over 3,000 years. The seeds are a tasty snack food once lightly roasted and they are rich in omega 3, 6 and 9, vitamin A, fiber, and protein. This superfood has been known to enhance mood, promote weight loss, lower cholesterol, and improve heart, bone, vision, and brain health.

LUCUMA

Nicknamed the ‘gold of the Incas’, Lucuma Powder is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants and is known to protect vision, the immune system and the heart. It has also proven to help manage blood sugar levels, therefore, protecting against chronic conditions such as diabetes. The great thing about Lucuma and its sweet flavour is that you can easily add it to cereals, desserts, and baked goods.
